Unrequited

Every drop of a flowing river is a different world

Even as I sit by the riverbanks

I can’t help but marvel at the sinewy water

Slipping by, with time

Maybe faster

Time slows down when I look at the river

The ripples create ripples in my being

The soft crashing of the water

Makes me feel like it was meant only for me

I dip my hands in the water

Trying to hold on to its abundant clarity

But it escapes me

The river is so ethereal

Like I should worship it

Like I should not want to leave

And in that infinite moment,

With my vast expanse of unrequited affection

I’m reminded of no one else, by the river

But you
